Sydney's Photos, pt. 1 -

We'll get back to straightforward escapism soon, but first, something a little different.

Some years ago, I decided to make a post about some things that used to belong to my grandfather, Sydney Chalmers, who died on 27.7.1955 in an El Al flight shot down over Bulgaria. In the time since I occasionally thought to continue with this - for a while I was slightly obsessed about finding details about his military service in the RAF (or maybe SAAF? I'm not 100% sure even about that) in WWII, which unit he served in and so on - but it got complicated, and I couldn't find any answers, and eventually I gave up.

Still, at my parents' place we have, in boxes containing a mess of family pictures from various times, a whole load of photos that grandpa Sydney took around the time of his military service, and they're rather interesting, so on the anniversary of his death I thought I could share some of them. Like in the previous post about him, it's sort of a way to get to know this grandfather that I never knew, through little details. The places he visited, the things he took photos of, the things he wrote on the back of the photos, they're all little fragments of his life back then, and it fascinates me to see all this. And since we really have quite a lot of photos, and I don't want to make one post that is too image-heavy, I'll make a series of them over the next days (or however long it takes me), and this, as you can glean from the title, is the first one.
(And if by any chance somebody reading this knows about these things better than I do, and can figure out how to recognise the specific unit, or any other information, or databases that might be helpful for my searches - because just looking online didn't work out that well so far - I'd love to hear about it. Thanks.)

Let us begin with a colorised photo of the young flight engineer Sydney Chalmers, in a handsome blue uniform, looking optimistic. Hello, Syd!

I also have a number of other photos of his in uniform, doing touristy things around India, such as buying souvenirs:

Riding a rickshaw (the writing on the back, which I didn't include here, says 'Calcutta' - the correct form of the name today is of course Kolkata - but I can't pinpoint the location):

Trying some local street food:

Tasting fruit fresh from seller

Horse-riding - although I suspect that might not have been a touristy thing as much as just a way to get places:

Taken at Dorothy's seat. I rode the horse up the hill-side for about 2000[?] ft. but had to walk down as it was too steep for the horse

And also fooling around with some local dress (improvised from a sheet? it has an improvised look about it), in a picture that really makes me think about my dad and his silliness:

But it wasn't all fun and games and playing tourist - after all, the reason he was in Asia in the first place was because of his military service, because of the War. I have some photos of his and his unit-mates, next to the airplanes they worked on:

(I don't really understand what they're doing with the propeller here, can someone explain?)

And also some pictures of airplanes, mostly Avro Ansons (to be precise, the model is Avro 652A Anson - which, from what I've seen, was also used by Israel in the Independence War in '48 [they call it 625A there, but that's probably a mistake], so there's some chance these photos are actually from that time, when grandpa Sydney came to Israel with Mahal and joined the IAF, also as a flight engineer... it's all a bit confusing), some of them on the ground:

I think that's probably him next to the plane, but hard to see.

This one's definitely an RAF airplane, though - a De Havilland Mosquito, to be precise.

And some pictures were taken in the air (again, I can't be 100% sure from when they actually are, it's hard to see details on the planes):

Definitely not RAF, but what symbol is it? A star or a star-of-David? If it's the latter, this should be an IAF airplane, and thus clearly not from WWII. Can anyone help?

And back to the mates - a cute series of photos shows grandpa Sydney and some anonymous friend of his, just doing stuff (including sleeping) around the camp:

I mean, I'm not sure if it's actually a series of photos, I'm just guessing, because they're all stamped on the back with the official copyright mark of the British Air Ministry (which was a thing that existed back then). Since these are the only photos with this mark, I'm guessing that maybe there was some official photographer passing through the area, and my grandfather later purchased the photos where he and the anonymous friend appeared.

And here's another cute photo with one of his mates This one's also relatively important, because it's one of the only photos that give me some sort of a time frame - on the back it says 'April 1942 at Risal-Pur'. This gives me a bit of a lead, since the unit that was deployed in Risalpur during the War was RAF Squadron no. 31, but without any further details this is still not much more than a guess.

And something else that's confusing to me - the following photo, which includes some kind of unit insignia with an elephant. It's not very clear on the scan, even though I tried making a clearer close-up, but the scroll at the bottom also seems to say 'G [or perhaps B, or 6] Batt., N.M.C.' - I'm not sure what kind of battalion it is, and whose, or even what N.M.C. stands for (possibly Navy and Marine Corps?), and I tried searching but found no battalion with an elephant symbol, so yeah, no idea what this is about.

And the writing on the back only adds to my confusion:

Italian prisoners? What? Were there even Italian troops at the Asian front? Or maybe this photo isn't even from Asia, and was taken somewhere else? I tried searching, but got kinda lost. I really can't figure any of it out.

And on that confused note (seriously, if anyone can help solve this, I'd be grateful), that's it for now. The next post will have a bunch of photos from various places around the Indian subcontinent and Asia in general, so if that's your thing, stay tuned for the next installment!

Update, 27.7.2015: I've neglected this blog for a year (because, well, because it happened that way) but today it is the anniversary again, and in fact it is the 60th anniversary of Grandpa Sydney's death, so it feels right to at least update this post with all the helpful information I got from people last year.

First, from the comments: Inbal added the information that (a) the star on the airplane in that last flying picture is definitely a star-of-david, so this is from his IAF service rather than from WWII; and more importantly (b) that the NMC were the Native Military Corps, a segregated corps of South African blacks, which served in various non-combatant roles during the War (you can read a little more about them here, and this article seems interesting as well, although I only skimmed it). And since the Italians were involved in some battles in East Africa, it seems likely this is at least the general area we're talking about. Very cool! Thanks, Inbal!

Second, from Facebook: my friend Uri turned out to be a font of knowledge regarding WWII airplanes. Regarding the group picture, he first identified the plane as a Mosquito, and then added: "The skin of both engine nacelles is dismantled, which is the way to access engines for maintenance. The plane is on crutches but engines and weapons are still mounted so it's probably undergoing second-tier maintenance of some kind. There are 12 men on the photograph; they are dressed sloppily; one of them is a corporal. I assume therefore that they belong to a maintenance detail of some sort and are not crew (Mosquito crews consisted of two officers, a pilot and a navigator, who would be unlikely to be photographed with sloppily dressed enlisted men)."
Regarding the propeller picture, he said: "It looks like it's an engine from a crashed plane - the propeller appears to be bent beyond repair. The engine is radial. It is smaller than Wasps of the B17 and it does not have cowling like the engines of the Mosquito. It also has an air inlet above the engine. It is consistent with the Bristol Beaufighter, which was fairly ubiquitous, but I'm not sure."
Thanks, Uri!
[I couldn't find any WWII airplane named or nicknamed 'Wasp' - although it's a bit hard to search since the WASP were also the Women's Airforce Service Pilots - but later got a correction from my BF Dan that it was actually a type of (radial) engine, the Pratt & Whitney Wasp, so that makes more sense. Also, here are the B-17 (nicknamed The Flying Fortress) and the Bristol Beaufighter.]

And third, from email: Yuval talked about the IAF Avro Anson planes (which are described here [Hebrew link], including the two seen in the pictures I have, the G-AIFB and the G-AIFC):
"There's an Avro Anson plane that got to Israel in pieces (in 1949) and was assembled (by the Aero Club or maybe by the air force). You can see the plane being assembled, in silver paint in an airfield (I think Ramat David) and in IAF paint (twice, in low flight over a field, and over the sea, I think near Haifa).
There's an Avro Anson that "crashed" during landing - that's why it's sitting on the ground, with a bent propeller. I wonder who's the engineer that responsible for that."
[This is about the plane that Uri identified as (probably) a Beaufighter; Yuval doesn't insist about his own idea, and I of course have no way to judge which one is right, so as far as I'm concerned both are possible options.]

He also mentioned that Wikipedia tells about an attempt to smuggle some Avro Anson planes from the UK to Israel during the Independence War [the English Wikipedia entry doesn't have those details, but you can read about it here], one of which was forced into emergency landing near Milan, which caused him to come up with an interesting idea:
"Another theory about the crashed plane - all the places that talk about the failed smuggling of the planes only mention the pilots. But there were 11 crew members in 4 planes that arrived in Greece. Which means they also had flight engineers (that makes sense, they were flying tincans over a long distance.
Idea - the fifth plane, that had an emergency landing **in a tilled field near Milan** was flown by Arnold Ilowite and some engineer. It was fixed within 10 days and flown to the Urbe airfield near Rome.
Who was the engineer, was it Syd? And is it a photo of them with the plane after the emergency landing?"

Although later on, after looking at the picture attached below (in the Hebrew part), the conclusion was that it is not the same airplane, or at least not the same crash landing.
Anyway, this is all very cool and enlightening. Thanks, Yuval!

It is so awesome to have such knowledgeable friends, and I'm sorry I didn't get around to updating all this stuff sooner.

And what about the other posts I promised, with the rest of Grandpa Sydney's photos? I hope to get around to that later in the summer. We shall see...

Friendship remains -

This is another photo that I had lying around for a long time now. Since I'm doing this series of anonymous people now, figured his time has come. I like him... I guess I end up saying this a lot, because after all, when I pick these postcards or photos from the big pile in the used book store, it's always because something in them speaks to me - it's always because I like them. Still, I like each one a little differently, for slightly different reasons.

This man, well, he just looks really nice. He looks serious and friendly and candid. I don't know if he really was any of these things, but he just has a really nice face, and I like him. He left a lovely message, too.

In Memory of your Sincere father Love. Time passes but friendship remains.
Mamo Azmera
22/10/67 A.A Ethiopia

For a while, I wasn't sure whether it said 4.4 or A.A; then I looked at it again, and suddenly realised that oh, of course, it must stand for Addis Ababa, and felt a bit silly for not realising it earlier. Also took me a while to read the man's name correctly, since I kept seeing it as 'Mauco', and couldn't figure out if that's a real name or not (the fact that apparently it's a French surname, and there are two French towns called Haut-Mauco and Bas-Mauco, as well as one Mauco which is some Nigerian web design company, didn't help). Eventually I found a good list of common Ethiopian names and went through it, and ran into 'Mamo', and it clicked. So, Mamo Azmera. Google didn't come up with anyone, except an Azmera Mamo, some family member of a dead Eritrean man in Canada (theoretically might be him, I suppose, but I doubt it), but I wasn't expecting much.

Well, this is the series of anonyms, after all. Just because this man happens to be supplied with a name doesn't mean I can find out anything about him. It doesn't make him any less anonymous. And of course, I have no idea who is the person that was given this picture, with the lovely dedication. No idea what he did for Mr. Azmera to receive such gratitude. No idea if the friendship did indeed remain, when time passed.

I hope so. He seems like such a nice man.

Fantastic! - !

Another short one. I actually bought a load of new old stuff in recent weeks (that darn Book Gallery put boxes of cards and photos outside, for 2 NIS each, and with a nice chair and parasol so I could just sit there and look at them and come up with more and more that I really must have), and at some point I'll probably do a longer post full of pictures of people I know nothing about. But right now, a short post is all I can muster.

And this card really is quite wonderful, and fully deserves its own post. And as with the best postcards, it is a twofold wonderfulness - there is an absolutely stunning photo on the front, and a neat message on the back. With the photo, there is only so much I can put in words, so have a look below and you can see for yourself why I love it so much.

Anyone who happened to spend some time in Istanbul (not Constantinople [I just had to update when I saw that I missed such a good reference]) - like my parents, for instance - will recognise right away the famous 'Blue Mosque', or Sultan Ahmed Mosque. A lovely building, but a lovelier picture, here.
That kind of dramatic contrast is why I tend to love black-and-white photos (and often wax lyrical about them), but in this card, I feel the colour makes it even more striking - everything works so well together, especially those blues and yellows, but also the light and the dark, the sharp, piercing minarets with the scraggly trees and round domes and the small white full moon above. Even without a message on the back, I probably would have considered buying this card just because this photo is so beautiful.
But there's a message on the back, as well, and that really sealed the deal.

Back:

Not really a point in supplying a transcript for a one-word message, is there?
'Fantastic!' - no, wait, 'Fantastic!' in capital letters - with the enthusiasm just spilling out of the every word, from the date to the address. It's a contagious sort of enthusiasm; I really can't look at it without smiling. They were obviously having a really good time.
Also, pretty cool stamps, especially that mustachioed warrior guy. I tried looking him up, but since it's all written in Turkish, on the stamp, I'm not sure I found the right person. Anyway, he seems like someone you wouldn't want to mess with.

Speaking of the address, I looked it up in the phone book, and there's actually an Aaron Lippman still listed at 12 Ibn Ezra St., which is cool. Also, it's quite a lovely house (pretty soon we'll have Google Street View over here as well, and it'll be easier to do this).

But really, the stamps and address and such are minor details. It's that one-word message, accompanied by the picture, that makes this card as great as it is for me. It's, well... fantastic.

Fantastic!

In Memory of Flight 402 -

I want to do something a little different, today. In this post, there are - as always - some fragments of a bigger story, but it this case, there isn't so much guessing about what the story is, because it is one that comes from my own family. It is the story of my grandfather, Sydney Chalmers, who was born in South Africa in 1921, served in the RAF in WWII, came to Israel as a volunteer shortly afterwards, met my future grandma in 1950, had my dad, and died on July 27th 1955, when the El Al plane on which he was the flight engineer was shot down over Bulgaria.
Nowadays he's buried in a mass grave with the rest of the victims in the Kiryat Shaul cemetery near Tel Aviv. We used to visit there every year; we don't, anymore.

Anyway, we have a few remnants of grandpa Sydney, at home - mostly the regular things, like old photographs (a few videos, even). My dad looks a lot like him. Just... older, now. Natural, of course, but still feels strange.

Sydney Chalmers - 1921-1955 -

And then - getting to the heart of this post - we also have a few books with inscriptions written to him by friends. I don't know who these friends were; I guess I could ask my dad, or one of dad's older cousins who might remember a bit about them, but it doesn't really matter. I just like the window these books open to the life of the grandfather I never knew.

[I would like to apologise in advance about the pictures below being even more crooked than usual - I took pictures with my camera because I didn't want to put the poor old books through the scanner.]

First, there are two books from a friend named Hector:

(1)

This is from this book:

A small book of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, in Fitzgerald's famous translation. That's a very nice title page, by the way.

(2)

This is from this book:

Gibran's The Prophet, also with a nice title page.
Pretty fascinating, all in all - says something either about this Hector guy, or about Sydney, or about both. I have no idea what Grandpa Sydney's taste in books was like; I have no idea if Hector bought these two for him because he himself appreciated them and wanted his friend to read them as well, or because he knew that Sydney was interested in this sort of thing, or what.

But with all due respect to Gibran, Khayyam and Fitzgerald, and to their literary works, this is what I personally consider the best of the three, for several reasons:

First of all, because it was a birthday present for him, on the same year that he died. By the way, he was 34, Penny. Not that it matters now, so many years after that birthday, so many years after his death.

And in a bit of a mood whiplash, the second reason why this is my favourite is because of the book it's on - a book that I decided to read solely because of this dedication, and was thus happily introduced to one of the funniest things I ever read:

(Click to enlarge -

No wait, sorry, this is just the inside cover, right before the title page. But it does give you a bit of an idea of the awesome mayhem to come. Here's the title page:

Molesworth!
Most people reading this will have no idea what this is. Neither did I. I only looked it up (first on h2g2 - my go-to source of knowledge at the time, and still a wonderful one by the way - and only recently on Wikipedia as well) after I read and loved it. I think maybe the best way to explain Molesworth to modern readers is to ask you to imagine what if Calvin, from Calvin and Hobbes, was a British boarding-schoolboy in the 1950s. Minus the tiger unfortunately, but with a best friend - sorry, 'grate frend' - named Peason, and an annoying little brother nicknamed Molesworth 2, instead. Got it? Good. Now imagine he wrote a book.
It has the sort of atrocious spelling that some people like to blame on the internet; it has a great disdain to all things school-related, with horror stories of every class from Latin (yes, they still studied Latin in school back then) to English to cricket; it has wonderful flights of fancy, especially about spaceships and aliens; and, at least from my subjective perspective, it is incredibly, roaringly funny.

Here's one example of the text, which I would like to dedicate to everyone who saw 'British boarding-school' and thought of Harry Potter (and/or to anyone who happens to be studying Latin):

And one more example - this time more specifically of the illustration style (by the inimitable Ronald Searle, who also made the more famous British boarding-school series St. Trinian's, and did some work for the New Yorker), but also showing (again) how generally awesome this book is. And I dedicate this one to all my linguist friends:

"But what is a gerund, sir?"

It's wonderful (I am seriously restraining the urge to just scan or photo all of it, page after page).
I wonder if Grandpa Sydney liked it. I wonder if he even got to read it, or if maybe he put it aside for another time, which never came. Yeah, the mood whiplash again. I guess it's odd, going from talking about death to gushing about how hilarious this book is, and then right back to death, but what can you do? Life is full of odd contradictions like that.
Personally, even though I never met my grandfather, I'm happy to remember him this way - not just in pictures, not just in the occasional stories, but in these little things like the books his friends gave him. I'm happy that he introduced me, even in such a round-about way, to a book I enjoyed so much. And I'm happy to share this with all of you.

Next time, back to the regular stuff. And by the way, if any Polish-speakers are reading this, I would love to talk to you for some help with a planned future post.

Felt like I need to do a quick update, having just found out that Ronald Searle - who illustrated the Molesworth books - passed away recently (30.12.2011), at age 91. Seems he was not just a wonderful illustrator but also led quite an interesting life. RIP, Mr. Searle.

Under the name of Sanders -

Update (19/5): After the post was deleted in last week's Great Blogger Crisis, I finally managed to recreate it, with the gracious help of my friend Aya (who also got one virtual cookie, hooray) and her RSS reader. Thanks, Aya!

Do you recognise the reference in the title, or am I just making jokes with myself? One virtual cookie to whoever points out what the title is about (two cookies for the full quote)!

Do you remember that Chicago postcard, where each member of a family wrote a few lines to their grandmother in Jerusalem? I mentioned there that I have some more postcards concerning these people, although I should have said 'one', because it turns out that's all I have (correction 19/5: On second thought, I actually might have another one. Ah well). Anyway, here it is now.

As with many of my other postcards, I picked it mostly because I liked the writing on the back. The picture on the front seemed, at first glance, to be just some kind of nature photo. Some grass, with few buds or mushrooms in it. It's an alright picture, but nothing special.

Front:

I later looked at the photo description on the back, however, and found out that these are psilocybe semilanceata: liberty cap, common british hallucinogenic mushroom. Which seems an... interesting choice. I wonder if the writer noticed what it is at all - if maybe it has anything to do with that stamp with the motto 'Look After Yourself' (a pretty long-running British health campaign, launched in 1978; see for example here [PDF!], on page 3), or maybe it's even an inside joke between him and the recipient - or if he also just thought it was some nature photo, if he just picked a random postcard from the shelf because what was important to him was the message he wanted to write, not what he would write it on.

The message is, in general, very simple and practical - after all, we're talking about a time before email or mobile phones. If he tried to catch them at the house where they're staying, and failed, and he has to send them the address of the hotel in which he already booked some rooms, this was more or less his only choice. It's a small - and, I think, lovely - example of the changes in inter-personal communications over the last few decades.

Anyway, since I mentioned the address of the hotel, it's time for playing detective. I looked for the two addresses mentioned in the postcard - the recipient's and the hotel. About the recipient's address there wasn't too much to find; I couldn't find Dr. Sanders at all (well, there are all sorts of Dr. Roger Sanders-es, but I have no idea if it's the same person), and about the house in that address I only found a little real-estate info (it was last sold in 2003, for a pretty good price), something historical about a guy that lived there in the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th (cool on its own behalf, but not really related to the postcard), and of course a picture of that house, in a nice little British street, courtesy of Google:

(Google also claims that there's some business called MilesToGo at that address - and I found a description here - but the URL seems to be defunct, so I don't know if it's still around or not.)

But the hotel? Oh, that's the coolest part. It still exists, at the exact same address. It has a website, of course. You can book a room online (the prices are a bit too high for my budget, but seem relatively alright for a hotel at such a central location in Rome), and they probably send you a confirmation email with the order number, and if you need to notify any other people you can just forward that. You don't have to look for people on the phone at the house where they happen to be staying at the time, and then send them a postcard with the details, which will one day find its way to a used book store and become an interesting mystery for some future person who comes upon it.

And that's a bit too bad, isn't it?

Collaborative writing -

Looks like I'll get another post in before the year ends.
I got the idea to do this postcard when, in the last post, I said there being a lot of people mentioned. Because this postcard also has a lot of people, but in a somewhat unusual way - it was actually written by about six different people.

We begin with the front, which shows a view of the Chicago River (interesting side note: when looking for the Chicago River on Google Images, you run into a whole lot of pictures where it is dyed green, which, I realised after a while, is some odd St. Patrick's Day tradition, and not the result of comic-book-style pollution or gamma rays), with a lot of skyscrapers and bridges and other markers of a large metropolis.

Front:

Since I've never been to Chicago, I can't speak much about the accuracy of this portrayal, although the sky kind of has this fake-clement look that you sometimes get in postcards of places not known for clement weather (I have, for example, a postcard I bought in Ireland simply because it featured an accurately grey and overcast sky while all the other postcards had a clear blue sky like you almost never actually see). Anyway, it's quite a typical city-view picture, with nothing very special about it.

The special part of the postcard begins on the back, where apparently every member of the travelling family got to say a few words. [Note: Some of the messages are in English, and some are in German; the German ones were difficult for me to even read well enough to transcribe them, so I left them out, but will of course be very grateful to anyone who can supply a transcription and/or translation.]

Something about this postcard is really fun. You have all the different people writing to the grandma, each with their own style and handwriting, each with their own highlights of the trip (food seems to be one main highlight, which I definitely approve of, although I must say that the concept of an English restaurant - and back in 1980, before any culinary renaissances or anything - is a bit scary, and going to two of them two days in a row is quite a feat). You can imagine them all sitting in the restaurant, passing the card around, chatting and joking. It's sweet.

Something interesting: if you look at the address, you can see that they started writing down one street, then realised it was the wrong one, crossed it and wrote the right address down. Did the grandma just move not long before? Both streets are fairly close to each other, in downtown Jerusalem, so if she did, it wasn't that big a move (by the way, here is a picture of the building at the address listed, 17 Shmuel HaNagid St. - that's pretty cool). Or maybe it was just a lapse of memory, like when you start writing and you realise you're writing your own address by mistake. Anyway, I suppose it made it to the right address, in the end.

So, a nice bit of family togetherness to end the year with. Actually, some of these people kinda crop up in other postcards I got (I suppose they were all sold to the store in the same batch), but it'll be a while before we get to them, because I have a great idea for something to open the new year. What is it? You'll have to wait and see. Happy New Year, till then!

Oxford -

This post is dedicated to my brother, who loves Oxford (and spent a number of lovely months there). Personally, I haven't been to the UK ever since we visited on a short family trip when I was 12, but I'll be happy to go back someday. And when I do, I think I'd be happy to spend some in Oxford, which looks like a gorgeous and fascinating town.

This postcard is also a good segue from the previous posts, that were focused on pictures I chose because I thought they were pretty, to the more 'regular' posts that focus on the stories that the postcards tell. Because here we happen to have both things: on the back, we have people, and some kind of story, but I think the picture on the front is just beautiful. Here, have a look.

Front:

At first, you only notice the large window at the centre of the picture - a patch of light in a dark room. Then you can look at details inside the room, the polished hardwood floor, the desks... and then you can look through the window, and see what in regular postcards would be the main focus: a tall, be-turreted building. This is the chapel tower in Merton College, Oxford. Here it is on Street View:

In the card, it's viewed from the library at Christ Church, but I couldn't find a good view from around there, on Google maps. Lots of beautiful pictures of that library, though. Goodness, I want to go there. I really want to go there.

Ahem. Where was I?
Right. In the bottom left corner of the card you can see the photographer's initials, CMA - which as I discovered on the back is Chris Andrews (I think his full name is Chris Meigh-Andrews, hence the M, but there's also another artist with that name so I might have gotten confused). He is still active today, and he still has many beautiful pictures of Oxford.
And on the back of the card, there's a story.

Back:

5 Dec 88 - Sam & Méry B. in Oxford for 1 sabbatical year till end of August 89. They hope strongly you are - all of you - all right and regret not to meet you more.
Pierre, Alexandre and Marianno live together in Paris this year. PA finishing a thesis in Maths and MA goes on studying Economics.
We like very much our life here, meeting a lot of people - life here easier than in Paris. Surely! Chalom to you & best kisses and wishes.

That's actually quite a lot of people. Beside the writers, who apparently moved to Oxford from Paris (and are happy about that), there are also the B.'s who came over for a sabbatical, and the three students living in Paris, and the two recipients in Jerusalem (not far away from my home, actually; although, according to the phone book, they are no longer there). It's not really possible to search for any of those people, though (or at least, it would take more effort than I'm willing to expand on this). Would have been cool to know what happened to them, over time.

There's a sort of Bohemian atmosphere to this, though. Not that I think Oxford academics (or math and economics students, for that matter) are really Bohemian, but still, something about it - those people living in Paris, those moving to Oxford, and names like Alexandre and Marianno and Méry - just makes me imagine something from a movie, with intellectual cocktail parties, and tweed and corduroy and fireplaces and grand old buildings. I suppose their real lives in 1988 Britain (or France, or Israel) were actually a lot more mundane, but I'll probably never really know, and as long as I don't know, I can imagine it any way I like.

So I look at the picture on the card again, at the sunlight streaming into the silent darkness of a centuries-old room, shining on the dark wooden floor, and I imagine how cool and still this room must be, and I imagine the people who chose this card and sent it, and I imagine their house, and their friends, and their stories. And that's almost as good as knowing what really happened.
