Radium and Deltiology - רדיום ודלטיולוגיה

בעקבות החופשה בסיאטל ממנה חזרתי לא מזמן, אני חושבת שהשבועות הקרובים יוקדשו לגלויות מידידתנו הוותיקה ארצות הברית של אמריקה... עם דגש על 'ותיקה' [כן, משחק המלים באנגלית יותר מוצלח, אבל אני מסרבת בתוקף להשתמש בצירוף 'הישנה והטובה', כי זה פשוט נשמע רע], כי הגלויות שמצאתי שם בחנות עתיקות (והייתי צריכה להתאמץ מאוד שלא לקנות את כולן) הן מהעשורים הראשונים של המאה ה-20. והן מדהימות.

Following my recent vacation in Seattle, I think that in the next couple of weeks will be dedicated to postcards from the good old US of A... with emphasis on 'old', since the postcards I found in an antique shop there (I had to stop myself from buying all of them) all date to the first decades of the 20th century. And they're incredible.

בהמשך עוד יבואו כמה סיפורים כמו-בלשיים עם כל מיני תגליות מעניינות, אבל בינתיים חשבתי לפתוח דווקא בגלויה כמעט נטולת פרטים, שבכל זאת מצאה חן בעיניי.

Later on I'll have some detective-ish stories with all sorts of interesting finds, but for now I decided to start with a postcard that actually has almost no details, but that I like anyway.

קודם כל, כי התצלום מצא חן בעיניי. האיש המסתורי בתמונה לבוש באופן מכובד למדי (אני גם אוהבת את הכפפות, והייתי רוצה שתהיה לי את תוכנת הקסם שמאפשרת לבלשים בטלוויזיה להגדיל ולחדד פרטים קטנים באופן בלתי אפשרי לחלוטין כדי לראות יותר טוב את הסיכה שהוא עונד על הדש), אבל מצד שני התנוחה הזו קצת מוזרה, ובעיקר, ההבעה שלו די מופתעת. כאילו הוא לא היה לגמרי מוכן לצילום. אולי הוא באמת לא היה מוכן, וההבעה התפקששה לו, אבל זה לא כמו עם מצלמה דיגיטלית, שאפשר לראות איך יצא ולצלם שוב אם רוצים. אז הוא שילם על הגלויה, ו... שמר אותה? נתן אותה למישהו? מי יודע.

First of all, because I liked the photo. Our mystery man has a pretty distinguished suit (I like the gloves, as well, and I wish I had the magic zoom-and-enhance program that TV detectives use for impossibly small details, so I could get a good look at his lapel pin), but on the other hand he's standing a little oddly, and mostly, has a kind of surprised expression. Like he wasn't ready yet when he was photographed. And maybe he wasn't, and got the strange expression, but this isn't like with digital cameras when you can see the results and take another picture if you want to. So he paid for this postcard, and... kept it? Gave it to someone? Who knows.

אין מסר כתוב מאחורה, אז אני משערת שהגלויה הזו שימשה רק בתור תמונה. אבל זה שאין מסר לא אומר שלא כתוב שם כלום; יש כמה פרטים אחרים שבזכותם למדתי כמה דברים מעניינים.

There is no message on the back, so I assume it was just used as a photo. However, no message doesn't mean there's nothing on the back; there are some other details that led me to find a few pretty interesting things.

כשקניתי את הגלויה, סקרנה אותי כתובת הצלמניה, Radium Portrait Studio, וקיוויתי שאוכל למצוא משהו עליה. לצערי, גוגל לא עזר הרבה בעניין, ומצא רק שתי גלויות אחרות שצולמו באותו מקום, שתיהן בלי הרבה פרטים מזהים (ואחת מהן היא בכלל באתר בשוודית). אבל באחד הקישורים הוזכר תארוך של הגלויה על ידי ה-stamp box, כלומר המרובע הקטן בפינה בשביל להדביק את הבול. עד אז בכלל לא שמתי לב אליהם, אבל מחקר קצר גילה לי שיש דבר כזה דלטיולוגיה - אספנות גלויות - ושדלטיולוגים רציניים שמים לב לפרטים כמו ה-stamp box, ושיש המוני סוגים שונים, ושזה שבגלויה שלי (של חברת AZO, עם ארבעה משולשים קטנים בפינות שכולם מצביעים כלפי מעלה) שימש בין השנים 1904-1918. זו היתה תקופה די מעניינת בסיאטל (כמו שלמדתי מגלויה אחרת, שתועלה בהמשך), ובעצם בעולם בכלל. אולי האיש המסתורי היה אחד מהמתעשרים החדשים בעקבות הבהלה לזהב באלסקה, או יזם שהגיע לעיר כדי לנצל את השגשוג המהיר שלה אז. או שאולי הוא היה סתם בחור צעיר שהתלבש יפה והצטלם לפני שיצא להלחם במלחמה הגדולה באירופה. אין עוד פרטים, ואי אפשר לדעת, אבל כיף לנסות לנחש.

When I bought this postcard, I was intrigued by the address for the photo studio, Radium Portrait Studio, and hoped to find something about it. Unfortunately, Google wasn't very helpful in this case, and could only find two other postcards from the same place, both of which had very few details to identify them (and one of them is on a Swedish website). But in one of those links there was a mention of dating the postcard through its stamp box - that little square in the corner when you stick the stamp. I haven't really paid attention to these until now, but with a bit of research I found out about deltiology - postcard collecting - and that serious deltiologists pay attention to details like stamp boxes, and that there are dozens of different kinds of them, and that the kind on my postcard (by AZO, with four little triangles in the corners, all pointing up) was used in the years 1904-1918. That was a pretty interesting time for Seattle (as I learned from another postcard, which I'll put up here at a later point), and in the world in general. Maybe the mystery man was a lucky prospector from the Klondike Gold Rush, or an entrepreneur who came to Seattle to take advantage of the rapid progress it was experiencing. Or maybe he was just some guy who dressed up nice and got his picture taken before going off to Europe to fight in the Great War. There are no details, so there's no way of knowing, but it's fun to guess.

Oh, and the photo studio? The building is probably long gone. In the late 90s, the Benaroya Hall was built on that block, and this is the only thing you'll find there today:
