The Blue Lakes -

It's hot out, so this week I decided to go for faraway, cold places. Today - Finland! The home of Tove Jansson and the Finn Family Moomintroll, where the moomins sleep for half the year because everything is covered in snow. Finland!

Seems sunny, actually, but so green and pleasant!
This is a small corner of Helsinki - I couldn't find a contemporary picture of this spot, but it's not very hard to find on Google Maps. The tall building in the top left is the Meilahti university hospital, and the building in the right on the front is the children's hospital Lastenlinna ('children's castle'). And everything has all those wonderful Finnish names like Humallahti and Merikannontie and Linnankoskenkatu, that are really fun to say.

But actually, the two main reasons I bought this postcard in the first place are on the other side; the pretty stamps (especially the one about Nuclear Data, I have to say; I find the design simple and beautiful), and the addressees in the Hydrological Service. I wonder if people today still send postcards to their workplaces - even people that still send postcards at all (I think I've done something like that once, but I'm a bad example, I also like writing letters on paper and sending them by snail-mail). There's something very nice about this.

We got here in poring [sic!] rain, but since then it's been two days and since then we've been searching all the more ardently for the blue lakes, after the Finlandian sun has risen.
Contrary to all our expectations, life here is pretty and inexpensive, excepting the food.

I wonder for how long they went there; it could just be some kind of  business trip, I guess, but the sentence 'life here is pretty and inexpensive' seems to imply, to me, a longer trip. Anyway, it sounds very nice there, and I think that I'd be willing to put up with Finnish food in exchange for a couple of those blue lakes.
Finland!
