101 Years Ago -

Another stand-alone postcard, from the same Bremerton antique store. The next bunch I'll post here are all kinda part of one story, but we'll get there in due time...

Anyway, when I picked this one up it was because it looked pretty old (probably just because it wasn't kept in very good conditions; on the back there is the same AZO stamp box as in the previous postcard, but of course, at the time I didn't know I can use it to date the card), and I liked the building in the background and how the people are dressed - the man with a hat and a cane, the ladies in big cumbersome dresses. Couldn't really tell where or when it was from, and the caption didn't seem like it'd be much help. MFG (manufacturing) building and machinery hall? Was this some kind of factory? I figured I should look it up online, but wasn't really hoping to find anything very useful.

Boy, was I wrong.
Just googling 'AYPE' was enough. The inscrutable initials (which at first I took to be the name of the photographer, or maybe the building) turn out to stand for one of the biggest events in the burgeoning Seattle of the early 20th century: The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909. The site linked might have a terrible colour scheme (green over pink, really?), but it supplies a whole lot of interesting information about the exposition, and is highly recommended reading for anyone who is interested in life in the US a century ago.

On this map, from the same website, you can also see the Manufactures Building (large building to the right of the Arctic Circle) and the Machinery Hall, below it and slightly to the right (between the King County and the Foundry buildings). And I think just looking at the names on the map can give us a pretty good idea of the huge scope of this exposition: a combination of Wonders-of Technology exhibits, local and state-related exhibits, cultural exhibits about various Pacific Rim peoples, and carnival-like amusements (along the Pay Streak avenue, mostly, although that's not exactly on the map, mostly back on the site). Something for everyone. And I can imagine that everyone did go there, from all over the area, and probably even from further away. AYPE seems to be in about the same line as the various World Fairs of later years; I'm not sure if there are expos this big and diverse, nowadays.

Another good link is to this collection, both because it contains a lot of photos from AYPE, and because it allows you to compare the map from 1909 with a current map (also, check the links supplied there for even more info about AYPE). The expo was built on some (then-)empty grounds belonging to the University of Washington, and after the area was developed the university used it for its own needs.

Unfortunately, that meant that many of these old buildings are gone now. The march of progress seems to have dictated demolishing these grandiose halls, and constructing new buildings. With lots of bricks. Bricks seem to be very popular.
The Arctic Circle is now called the Drumheller Fountain, and to the right of it, where the Manufactures Building stood until 1918, is an empty space, with the Guggenheim Hall (built in 1929 - of bricks, of course - and actually rather nice-looking) behind it:

Where the Machinery Hall used to stand is now the Mechanical Engineering building, built in the 1950s - and while the content is definitely fitting, the building itself is nothing but a boring square pile of bricks:

Yay, progress.
Anyway, that's the story behind the postcard. I still have no idea who purchased it originally, and how it got to the antique store where I found it, but I had the chance to peer through a window to a different era, and I'm happy for that. It's been a fascinating journey.

  2. Hi, and thanks!
I looked up the Adore LP, and I have to admit I can't really see a resemblance. Care to elaborate?
